Why “diets” generally don’t work

How are you all getting on this week? Have you made some small changes to your daily routine that have helped you on your way to a healthier lifestyle? Can you pinpoint what has made you feel positive? If you’ve had a relapse then do your best to get back into the zone and on the right path for the week. Don’t let things slip further...only you can pull yourself back to centre again. Start by drinking some more water and eating a some more vegetables with your meals...that’s always a good starting point. Have you had a workout this week and if not are you going to be doing something active that will boost your mood? Today’s Topic This week we are looking at your why “diets” generally don’t work for you.

Every one of us at some point has tried a popular diet...think about the ones you have tried in the past and really think about the lasting results you got from them. Did they help you achieve your goals and put you on the path to a healthier lifestyle long term?

Conventional and traditional fad diets usually don’t work. Some diets are tedious, pointless and even dangerous to your body!

Sure they might help you lose body fat in a few weeks of months but in the very long term you won’t be able to continue with these fad diets because untimely you usually gain all the weight back and this doesn’t do your body any favours.

Fad diets operate on restricting you and in effect usually starve you of something important that your body needs (it could be carbohydrates or fat or protein). Everyone needs complex carbohydrates (grains like brown rice, millet, buckwheat, quinoa, rye, barley) to function – to think, for energy, for a positive attitude. Depriving yourself to extremely low levels of carbohydrates for any length of time can leave you with mood swings, stomach cramps, depression, anger, dizziness, headaches and constipation.

Most fad diets restrict the intake of essential fatty acids (EFAs). EFAs help your body dissolve fat so when you cut out the foods that contain the EFAs it’s like cutting out the fat burning agents. Avocados, brazil nuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts and sesame seeds are all full of EFAs.

Great foods will:

  •  Boost your thinking power

  •  Lift your mood

  •  Reduce Stress

  •  Boost your vitality

  •  Give you a healthier heart

Your “diet” should be a healthy new lifestyle change with an abundance of healthy and nutritious food. Not about starving yourself. Healthy food choices can make you look and feel great.

Make simple changes on a daily basis and those changes will begin to take effect immediately and last for life.

Fitness Fact of the week What should you eat before you work out? Great pre workout snacks eaten 1 -2 hours before include: Fresh fruit, dried apricots, dates or raisins, homemade smoothies or shakes, yoghurt, energy/nutrition/cereal/flapjack bar, toast with honey or jam or porridge or wholegrain cereal with milk.
